A Night of Rarities — The Macallan Rare Cask

The Macallan Rare Cask is dubbed ‘Rare Cask’ for one fundamental reason — less than one percent of casks from the distillery are specially selected by master whisky maker Bob Dalgarno for use in the maturation process of this particular whisky. To mark the launch of this particular expression, The Macallan transformed The White House in Singapore into an interactive showcase dedicated to taking whisky connoisseurs through the processes of creating this whisky from acorn to the bottling of the exquisite liquid.

The Macallan showcase ran from 15 July to 2 August 2015 and featured a series of private and public events hosting guests from around the region. They served as an initiation to the world of The Macallan through an education in the making of the Rare Cask. This was done through the use of innovative displays and walkthroughs by brand ambassadors.

The main attraction of the event was the dunnage warehouse that was recreated for the event to afford guests the opportunity to nose the actual oak casks used in the maturation process. These were shipped over from Scotland specifically for the launch to showcase the differences between a fresh American sherry-seasoned cask and a first-fill sherry-seasoned cask.

Tio Pepe sherry master and venenciador Alejandro Benitez was on hand to talk about what goes into sherry making and how it affects the overall flavour of whisky.

The event also featured an exhibition by collectors of various rarities, including stamps, coins and timepieces. On display were Dr Bernard Cheong’s private collection of watches, including a Greubel Forsey Invention Piece 1 Platinum that is valued at more than US$500,000, as well as displays of stamps and coins from Stanley Gibbons.

The Macallan Rare Cask retails for S$525 (excluding taxes) in Singapore.
