Lunchtime: the phrase that never fails to brighten up weary faces of working adults. One of our favourite go-tos have to be Japanese food. From fresh seasonal sashimi to crispy shrimp tempura, we list some must-try Japanese restaurants, suitable for business lunches with your associates or clients, to savour.
Opened by one-Michelin-starred chef Shinji Kanesaka, Shinji unsurprisingly specialises in fish and seafood, paying homage to the spirit of Japanese culinary tradition. Its sea urchin, tuna and horse mackerel are air flown into Singapore four times a week and carefully prepared to garnish the plates. When you enter the restaurant, you’ll be greeted by friendly chefs ready to prepare your meal for the day such as the omakase lunch special. The lunch set includes an appetiser, assorted sashimi, cooked dishes, nigiri sushi, soup and Japanese fruits. If you prefer a simple and light fare, its setsugetsuka sushi set includes nigiri sushi adorned with a variety of seasonal catches, served with soup and dessert.
Get ready for a gastronomical ride at NAMI — a new restaurant and bar situated on level 24 of The Tower Wing of Shangri-La Hotel Singapore. In celebration of Japan’s four seasons, the kitchen guarantees a royal feast that will entertain all of your five senses. Led by chef Shigeo Akiba, this restaurant undoubtedly draws you in with its dashi stock, creating a complex and intense mixture of umami. With the dashi as a base, its dishes are like no other. Set lunches showcase an impressive array of choices such as sashimi, tempura, sushi, Australian Angus Beef Komiyaki or Sukiyaki. For a heartier meal, rice bowls are served with either slices of tuna and salmon or deep-fried pork cutlet, complemented by miso soup and tangy pickles. When you’ve laid down the chopsticks on your empty plate, enjoy a scoop of matcha ice cream.
Located at Forum shopping mall, Kaiseki Yoshiyuki offers two tiers of set lunches from quick business lunches to lengthier affairs — the Tenshin Lunch and Kaiseki Lunch respectively. Derived from the 16th century tea ceremony rituals, the Kaiseki Lunch uses the finest and freshest ingredients imported from the Tsukiji Fish Market. The meal consists of a light appetiser, sashimi, grilled and simmered dishes, rice with seasonal ingredients along with pickles, a bowl of soup, and Japanese sweets to finish it off.
