BLLNR Reviews: The Sanchaya

Just a hop, skip and a jump away from Singapore is a luxury lovers dream vacay.



I have been in Singapore for six years now and every once in a while I will hear someone talk about their trip to The Sanchaya. It is always followed by coos and gasps of how lucky they were to have gone. So a few months ago I decided that enough was enough, I like luxury, I like holidays - it's time to go to the famed Sanchaya.



Well one of the best things about The Sanchaya is the location. All you need to do is get yourself to Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, which is near Changi Airport. Once there, there's a dedicated check-in for you and even a special lounge for you to wait for your ferry. A trip to the hotel also gives you the exclusive Emerald Class seats on the 50 minute  ferry and a dedicated speedy customs clearance once at Bintan. Once you've had your cold towel and refreshing water in the VIP lounge, you are ushered by private car the eight minutes to the hotel. 



Built on 10 hectares of land, The Sanchaya is an interesting mix of colonial charm meets classic grandeur. As you arrive you are faced with a stunning, sprawling colonial style building but once inside, linen and wood sofas adorn the reception while plush leather sofas and huge glass chandeliers make up the library. Dining is a black and white affair with the colonial era  coming out in full force, right down to the ironed table cloths. 



In one word: spacious. Carefully designed for upmost privacy, there are 21 suites and nine villas located across the sprawling estate. The suites are designed around the colonial meets classic vibe with dark wood floors and grey and white decor. One of the most sublime parts of the suites has to be the enormous bathroom- always a massive plus in my book, the bathroom boasts a huge tub and shower around a black and white theme. Special mention has to go to the uber comfortable bed and sublimely soft sheets which made it hard to leave.  

While the villas and suites sleep two, there are also two bedroom villas, as well as Vanda Villa with its very own swimming pool which sleeps eight people and Leelawadee which is made up of  three villas all around a 17 metre swimming pool. 



The service at The Sanchaya runs like clockwork and this is mainly down to General Manager, Magnus Olovson, whose enthusiastic and personable nature sets the tone from the top down. The hotel runs seamlessly with friendly and helpful staff available for your every whim.



While the hotel sits on a beautiful stretch of beach, bathing in the sea isn't recommended due to it's proximity to the ferries. That's not to say that the beach is wasted though, as beautiful rattan loungers and umbrellas line the beach for your sunbathing pleasure. Then there's the natural saltwater pool which is a real treat and even boasts loungers dipped in the water so you can cool as you tan - brilliant. 

For the more active, there's a gym, paddleboarding, archery and even croquet to keep up with the colonial feel. Personally all this was too active for me so I checked out the spa and I'm more than glad I did. With a huge range of beauty treatments, this little pampering paradise was one of the best hotel spas I have found.  



The hotel houses two restaurants - The Dining Room which offers a more formal affair, overlooking the gardens and the Tasanee Grill, which, overlooking the pool, is  a more casual experience.  For the Dining Room, it's a sublime mix of  Indonesian and European food and the Tasanee Grill is inspired by Bangkok street food. Of course there's also 24-hour in room dining if all that pampering and sun bathing has been too much.
