Three travel trends to inspire your next family trip

When it comes to keeping the little ones happy on vacation, a small room with colouring pens and craft paper just doesn’t cut it anymore so here are three trends to keep even the fussiest little people on their toes.

Educational trips

Families are increasingly looking to incorporate learning experiences into their family trips, allowing their kids to widen their perspectives beyond textbooks — surprisingly, these elements are usually requested for by the kids themselves! A trip for kids replete with educational value and one that’s wonderfully fun?

For families with children keen on natural history and wildlife, the Scott Dunn team recommends the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador. The South American archipelago is filled with both urban and rural charm, and is replete with magical wildlife that fascinated Charles Darwin himself in the 1800s — the perfect place for nature-loving kids. At this family-friendly destination, the Scott Dunn team can arrange for myriad experiences, such as guided swims with sea lions and turtles, and trips through the fabulous Otavalo countryside — located 2500 metres above sea level and surrounded by lush green hills — on horseback or on bike.

Greece is another destination for an enriching and engaging trip for kids, especially those keen on history and culture. A three-hour drive from Athens lies Costa Navarino, an unspoilt region marked by sandy beaches and ancient ruins. Along the way, you’ll discover famous sites like the ruins of Sparta and Olympia, as well as cosy local communities that still make their living from living off the land through fishing and olive oil production.

The region is also famed for its natural wetlands and nature reserves, which often serve as important stops for many migratory birds such as flamingos, making for incredible sights. The upscale resorts in the area boast fabulous facilities as well; at The Romanos and The Westin, families will love the enormous aqua park, and an extensive list of water sports available, including stand up paddle boarding, kite surfing, kayaking and sailing, that will keep the kids happy for hours.

Trips where little ones can learn new skills

Kids aren’t just looking to expand their knowledge and soft skills. In recent times, Scott Dunn sees that the little ones are also looking to their vacation time as a period in which they can try their hand at new experiences, and hopefully better them. Ski trips are notorious for being logistically challenging when undertaken alone — especially with children but these days these worries are no more.

At many of the resorts nowadays, experienced teachers are on hand to help lace the little ones up in ski gear and chaperone them to the slopes, keeping a close eye on them as they indulge in winterland fun. Convenient ski school drop-off and pick-up services are also available at many of the sites, making their first time on the slopes seamless and smooth, and allowing both kids and parents to focus on having as much fun as possible.

On another sporty note, in sunny Croatia, children of all ages have the chance to be coached by ex-Premier League and International players, alongside professional UEFA-licensed coaches, all set against the glorious backdrop of a lush resort handpicked by discerning travel consultants.

Memorable trips for family bonding

At the end of the day, holidays as a family are, at their core, about bonding and creating lasting memories together. What better way to create these memories than at these incredible destinations.

A South African safari is often thought of as the pinnacle of travel experiences, and for good reason: Watching majestic animals up close in the bush, learning about key conservation initiatives in person, basking in the sunrise and sunset on savannah… the possibilities are endless. Though some may shirk at going on safari with kids due to the perceived logistical and safety challenges, Scott Dunn’s travel experts have plenty of experience up their sleeves in planning for smooth and enjoyable safari trips for the whole family.  One such partner property is the Madikwe Game Reserve, which boasts specially designed activities for kids, such as bush orientation, bug CSI, dung-tracking, a curated children's den — and, of course, tailor-made safari game drives suitable for both children and grown-ups.

Looking for a similar option that’s closer to home? How about Sri Lanka. The famed Yala National Park is home to one of the highest concentrations of leopards in the world, and also boasts a sizable population of elephants, sloth bears, and deer, making for the perfect place for an enthralling game drive in search of these elusive creatures. Further south, the stunning stretches of coastline in Tangalle offer a slice of authentic Sri Lankan culture untouched by mass tourism. There, take your kids cycling through beautiful coconut groves and on the expansive beaches, or witness the rare turtle-hatching season along the coast.

Lastly, there are few trips as magical as one to the Finnish Lapland. From hand-feeding a reindeer at a beautiful reindeer farm with a sleigh ride after, to heart-pounding husky safaris and sleepovers beneath a glass roof with the Northern Lights stretching overhead, a trip to the Finnish Lapland is a highly recommended experience for families travelling with kids where you can always add some magic by organising a surprise visit from Father Christmas himself!
