Thinking Of Merging With Another Company? Read This First

$30 million: That’s the size of the merger deal when Vodien joined forces with Australia's online solutions provider Dreamscape Networks in July this year. The company is the leading cloud hosting provider in Singapore. 

The deal is the largest for a pure-play hosting provider in Southeast Asia, resulting in a company that will be an Asia Pacific powerhouse in the online solutions space. The discussion to merge had been mooted by Dreamscape, which was looking for a strong partner to build a robust Asia presence. 

Vodien’s CEO Alvin Poh says there were many synergies that led to the merger, “We personally made a trip down to their office and were pleasantly surprised to find out that the way we both operated were very similar. Finding out that they prioritised customer experience is very important to us, since that’s what we pride ourselves on too. 

“Another point of similarity is that Dreamscape is a founder-led organisation, and we interacted well with the senior management team, which led us to have faith in the ability for us to work well together.” 

Poh is naturally pleased with the outcome, saying it recognises the effort and hard work that he and his team have put in to get to where they are today. It also bodes well for Dreamscape, which can instantly leverage on Vodien’s capabilities and together, expand into the rest of Southeast Asia as an integrated online solutions business. 

Founded in 2002 by Poh and his business partner John Lee, who is also the COO, Vodien is focused on helping small-and-medium-sized enterprises get online and start having a web presence and email services quick and easy. 

“We were initially resellers of other hosting providers. But poor customer service, slow support response times, and poor hosting performances caused us a lot of frustration and grief. It gave us a very good idea of what exactly we needed to fix, and how we could focus on creating an experience that customers would appreciate,” reveals Poh. 

Together with Lee, he evolved the business to become what it is today, with the unique selling points of customer support and engineering – what it abbreviates as the four S-es of speed, support, security and stability. 

“We not only focus on providing knowledgeable and prompt 24/7 customer support, but also engineering the best product experience in terms of performance and reliability for the customer.” 

With the finalisation of the merger Poh and his team can now shift their attention to taking the business to the next level. Vodien currently has more than 400 support agents to provide the level of customer service that it strives to achieve. 

On one hand it intends to revamp its current internal systems and processes to be even more robust and advanced; on the other hand, it will be expanding its support manpower numbers significantly to be able to handle the intended growth.
