Dyson makes £330 million investment in Singapore

James Dyson says Singapore is home to “some of the world’s brightest minds.”
At the opening of Dyson’s new Technology Centre in Singapore, its founder James Dyson said that the British company will be investing a whopping £330 million in its future in Singapore.
In his speech, Dyson said: “it is no coincidence, that to realise our technology ambitions, we are deepening our commitment to Singapore. You have some of the world’s brightest minds. Working together, we hope to make more breakthroughs. New technology, will catapult us forward, just as the Digital motor has done.
“Dyson is focused on developing intelligent technology. We are making products which know and anticipate what you want, before you do. This 'machine learning' gives our products the intelligence to understand and react to their environment. This is central to our future. We are on a hunt for the brightest minds.
“Singapore understands, and values, the contribution engineers make to society. Importantly, you have graduates with highly skilled minds.”
Located 30 minutes from its advanced motor manufacturing facility in West Park, Dyson’s new Technology Centre here will bring together the brightest minds in hardware and software engineering. With it, Dyson plans on expanding its Singapore-based engineering team further by 50 per cent — it currently hires over 1,100 people. The centre will be focused on developing new and future technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics and vision systems.
“Dyson and Singapore have enjoyed a strong partnership since 2007, when Dyson established its Global Headquarters for Manufacturing & Operations Control here,” said Mr S. Iswaran, minister of trade and industry. “Today, Dyson employs over 1,000 employees in Singapore, with competencies in Research, Design and Development, Supply Chain Management, and Advanced Manufacturing. During my tour of this new Centre earlier today, I met a number of young engineers who are behind Dyson’s innovations. I was pleased to learn that the Singapore team was closely involved in the development of Dyson’s game-changing technologies and products, including the Digital Motor, bladeless fan, and the recently launched SuperSonic hairdryer.
“The success of this partnership is testament to the strong alignment between Dyson’s ambition to be a global technology leader, and Singapore’s vision of developing an innovation-led economy.”
Dyson first opened its facility in 2007 at Science Park 1. In 2009, It moved its development facility to a bigger site at Alexandra Technopark and increased its staff count by 700%. Its West Park facility opened in 2012 and, in the following year, Dyson made an investment of S$100 million to the facility. In 2015, the company invested an additional S$100 million in West Park, including creating a new line to manufacture Dyson’s V9 motors. The West Park facility produces one V9 motor every 2.6 seconds.
