It’s Goodbye To Elle

Major changes are underway at Mediacorp.

Any close observer of the media industry in Singapore will know that these are challenging times indeed, but with that said, it still came as a surprise to hear that after 25 years, Elle Singapore is closing its final issue, and relinquishing their publishing licence for the title, in October of this year.

While the magazine had always been seen as a relative success story in the world of franchise, more recently Elle’s difficulty translating that publishing success into the world of online has been sited as one of the major reasons for the closure – along with declining ad spends and growing market uncertainty from advertisers.

But it’s not just Elle that’s over at Mediacorp, two weekly entertainment titles, 8 DAYS and i-weekly, are also closing their doors at the end of September to move to a digital only offering, while parenting website, SmartParents will be closing around the same time.

Speaking of the changes, Mediacorp Chief Customer Officer, Debra Soon, told the press that: “We appreciate the efforts of the teams who have developed these properties into the household names that they are today. Yet, it is imperative that we invest our resources in properties that are part of our future plans. As a result, of the changes, a number of roles will be affected. Over the next six months, Mediacorp will work hard to retrain and redeploy affected employees to other jobs within the company’s various growth areas.” While a wider statement said that the closures down company restructuring, adding “These decisions are in line with Mediacorp’s efforts to refresh the iconic 8 DAYS and i-weekly brands as it focuses on building its own lifestyle and entertainment content. Through these brands, Mediacorp will continue to offer advertisers targeted, innovative solutions.”
