Bentley Introduces the Ultra Performance Hybrid

A new era in luxury performance.

Bentley is taking another significant step towards the future with the announcement of its all-new, performance-focused V8 hybrid powertrain, set to succeed the iconic W12 engine. This new system, named the Ultra Performance Hybrid, promises to deliver the highest power output ever seen in a Bentley, along with unparalleled dynamism, responsiveness, and efficiency. This groundbreaking development marks the beginning of a new generation of daily supercars.

The Ultra Performance Hybrid embodies Bentley’s tradition of enhancing its class-leading combustion engines with cutting-edge technology to boost performance. This journey began with supercharging in the 1920s and evolved through turbocharging from the 1980s onward. Now, Bentley is set to introduce ‘electrocharging’—a powerful hybrid system that stands as the most advanced and potent powertrain in Bentley’s 105-year history.

Building on Bentley’s existing hybrid technologies, the Ultra Performance Hybrid takes performance and efficiency to new heights. With over 750 PS and an electric-only range of 50 miles (80 km), this new powertrain surpasses the power output of the W12 engine by at least 91 PS. This remarkable achievement positions the Ultra Performance Hybrid as a leader in the realm of electrified luxury performance vehicles.

As Bentley’s 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 engine approaches its retirement this summer, having seen 105,000 units built over the past two decades, the Ultra Performance Hybrid will take its place as the premier powertrain. This transition ushers in a new era for Bentley’s fleet, combining superior power with a four-figure torque over a wider plateau and achieving a WLTP drive cycle CO2 figure of under 50 g/km.

To give enthusiasts a taste of what's to come, Bentley has released a sound clip of the new engine, showcasing its distinctive cross-plane bass and free-revving growl. This sound represents one extreme of the audio spectrum the powertrain offers, contrasting sharply with the absolute silence it delivers in electric mode.

More information about Bentley’s new electrified powertrain will be unveiled in the coming weeks. This development is a crucial part of Bentley’s Beyond 100 journey, which aims to ensure that every vehicle in its lineup is available as a hybrid. Meanwhile, customers can still enjoy the final units of Bentley’s W12 and non-hybrid V8 engines, available through Bentley’s global retailer network.
