Rolls-Royce Cullinan, A Supremely Luxurious SUV

The last word in luxury, thanks to Rolls Royce.

It's fair to say that Rolls Royce know a thing or two about luxury. With their fleet of cars being the absolute pinnacle of style, success and opulence, the iconic British brand have just thrown their very fabulous hat into the ring of SUV's with the Cullinan.

Speaking of the launch, Rolls Royce Chairman, Peter Schwarzenbauer had this to say:  “The launch of a new Rolls-Royce model is always a seminal moment in the luxury industry. Today we are setting a new standard by creating a new class of motoring and motor car for customers who are well-connected, highly mobile and have a global perspective. They want a new type of motor car that gives them unbounded access in ultimate luxury. Their sense of adventure and daring demands a “go-anywhere in ultimate luxury” motor car that will both take them to and meet them at the pinnacle of life. Cullinan is that motor-car.” While Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars added that “The super-luxury lifestyle is evolving and Rolls-Royce is in the lead. Luxury is no longer an urban concept. More and more it is about embracing and experiencing the wider world. Our customers expect to go everywhere in luxury, effortlessly and without compromise, conquering the most challenging terrain to enjoy life’s most enriching experiences, wherever they may be. For this reason, they have asked us to create a Rolls-Royce that offers uncompromised luxury wherever they dare to venture. Cullinan is that car. It is Effortless, Everywhere. It is incomparable and dramatically evolves the parameters of super-luxury travel, translating Rolls-Royce’s ethos of ‘Effortlessness’ into physical capability, anywhere in the world. Cullinan will simply take the world in its stride.”

So, what is it actually like? Well, let's start with the name which should give you some indication of what we are playing with her. The Rolls Royce Cullinan is named after the largest diamond ever found, which is now encrusted in the British Crown. The Cullinan has all been designed to be all-terrain, making it the most versatile car in Rolls Royce's fleet. Then there's the technology; think night vision and vision assist, four camera with panoramic view systems, active cruise control, lane changing warning, boot space that ranges from 560-600 metres, multiple configurations of the back seats and 6.75 litre twin-turbo engines with 850Nm torque. Longer and wider than both Bentley's SUV and Range Rover's most luxurious model, the Cullinan comes in at a whopping 5,800 pounds, meaning it packs quite the punch. Helping this weight is the same computer-controlled self-levelling air shocks Rolls-Royce puts in its Wraith, Ghost, and Phantom road cars, meaning the larger air struts and volume help to manage impact and jossling on rough terrain. It also, very helpfully, actively pushes down the wheels when they sense broken contact with the ground, helping maintain traction at all times. Need to go through water? No problemo in this beast, with the Cullinan taking on 21 inches deep of water.

But of course, being Rolls Royce, it's not all about what's under the hood, with style and elegance taking centre stage. Inspired by the era when one simply never travelled with one's luggage, a glass partition separates passengers from any unsightly luggage. Then there's the actual drive itself, promised to be reminiscent of a magic carpet ride, thanks to the clever positioning of seats and design, the car can hold from two to four passengers easily and effortlessly. But should you wish only to limit your passengers to two and forgo the unique fold-down back seat option, then you can look forward to a drinks cabinet and small fridge - for the champs of course. Of course, with Rolls Royce, a car is not simply a way to go from A-B but an experience in itself, the car automatically lifts 40mm on starting, putting passengers in the perfect position to see the world as you whizz by in the ultimate opulence. But for our favourite part? Well, this has got to be the fact that upon arriving at your destination, the front and rear doors wrap under the base of the car, ensuring that all dirt stays outside of the door, away from the car and most importantly, away from your trouser leg. Sheer genius.
